Started as a General course department in 1963.

Honours was introduced in 1965.

The subject is extremely dynamic, dealing with thought-provoking issues and addressing the political environment of the day.

The department offers facilities like access to seminar library, departmental library, and organization of interdepartmental seminars.

The study of the discipline opens up several opportunities in life – enrolment in Master’s course, competitive exams like SSC, WBCS, PSC, NET, SET, employment in the area of mass communication and so on.
